ABSTRACT:

There is a known gap in architectural design between the ability to engineer acoustics and the need to design for the perception of sound, or “soundscape.” Equity falls through that gap, in terms of accessibility but also social cohesion. Because the Living Building Challenge is the only architectural certification to specify Equity in its standard, this study uses the Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design, certified LBC in 2021, as a test case for prototyping a soundscape-design questionnaire. Targeting blind and low-vision users, the questionnaire also proposes a framework of perceptual and cultural considerations for soundscape design in future projects.
