Perkins+Will’s Process Lab taught a workshop in Design Space Construction at ACADIA in Ann Arbor Michigan October 24-26, 2016. Participants from Architecture firms and schools around the country gathered October to learn a methodology and associated tools for formulating, executing, and communicating design spaces to support performance-based decisions.
In day one, participants learned the methodology and associated tools for formulating, executing, and communicating a design space in support of performance-based decisions. Specifically they learn to: Formulate a design space, including Objectives, Alternatives, Impacts, and Value; Create a parametric model exploring building form and materials; Define energy, light, and view analysis; Explore a design space, including understanding importance and sensitivity of design parameters; Define a value equation, and optimize the building design; and, Report the results into an online database capable of storing and comparing design spaces. After a day of learning these methods, participants broke into teams and spent two days in a collaborative project constructing new and more challenging design spaces to meet the real world Perkins+Will challenge of designing a child care center.
